When it came out in 1998, this was Chris Newman’s first solo album since 1983 when he made CN2 (see below). Fretwork mainly consists of Chris’s own fresh and melodic compositions - some exhibiting his trademark virtuosity, some a touching lyricism - but also contains some traditional pieces, including the version of Scott Skinner’s Mathematician with which he’s been stunning live audiences for years! Guesting on the album are Máire Ní Chathasaigh on piano, Irish harp & tin-whistle and Máire’s sister Nollaig on violins.

Adventures with a Flatpick
This book contains guitar transcriptions (in normal notation & tablature) of Chris’s best-known pieces. Several of them, including the celebrated Mathematician, are to be found on his solo CD Fretwork. His carefully-worked fingerings and cleverly-designed preparatory exercises bring this wonderful music within reach of the intermediate-level player for the first time and will be immensely illuminating for the more advanced player.
In the course of Chris’s touring career with Máire and with Boys of the Lough, he’s given workshops and masterclasses throughout Europe and North America and some of his most-requested teaching material appears in this book. 38 pages
