The Carolan Albums
During the summer of 1991, Old Bridge Music released 'The Carolan Album' on cassette only. This recording contained twelve of the best-known compositions of the celebrated blind Irish harper and composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738). In 1994 we released 'The Carolan Album Volume 2' which contained twelve more, perhaps lesser-known, pieces.
These two recordings are now available as one album - hence the plural in the title! 'The Carolan Albums' is a 66-minute CD/cassette containing all 24 tracks from the two cassette releases - the definitive recordings of these much-loved melodies, arranged with meticulous attention to detail for Irish harp and acoustic guitar by Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman.

Live in the Highlands
This recording was made between 27 May and 3 June 1995 in the course of a hugely enjoyable series of concerts at the 2nd Highland Harp Festival held in Balnain House, Inverness (Scotland's centre for the promotion of Highland music) and in the Western Isles of Skye, Harris, Benbecula and Mull, at the tail-end of six solid months of touring.
The tracks are presented in more or less the same order that they were performed on stage, except that the middle section was chopped out so what you're left with is the first half of the first set spliced on to the second half of the second set! (All the spoken introductions and stories have also been left to languish on the cutting room floor!)

The Living Wood
In 1988, Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman released 'The Living Wood', their critically acclaimed first album together. It originally appeared on the American Green Linnet label, then on Black Crow. The licence reverted to Old Bridge Music in 1994 and we were delighted to be able to re-release it on Old Bridge Music. The excellent Bryan Ledgard redesigned the sleeve, and Chris digitally remixed it for optimal sound quality.
The album created a considerable stir, being to our knowledge the very first harp/guitar duo album ever to be recorded. It was the Daily Telegraph's Folk Album of 1988, and one of its top three of the decade. (It also provided the theme tune for the TSW TV series 'Off the Hook' - and for an early-morning RTE Radio programme.)

Dialogues
These musical conversations range from a 17th century air and the newly-discovered 18th century 'Hidden Pearl' to Máire and Chriss own compositions: Máires Irish-style 'Three Piece Suite' and Chriss jaunty 'Banana Yellow' & jazzy 'Swinging the Lead.' The album contains four songs, and the guest musicians are Nollaig Casey & Iain MacFarlane (fiddles), Simon Mayor (mandolin), Liz Hanks (cello), Roy Dodds (percussion)

Out Of Court
In late 1991, Máire and Chris released 'Out of Court', an effervescent mixture of baroque-influenced Carolan, straight-down-the-line Irish dance music, haunting songs and a 17th century air from the ancient Irish harp tradition, interspersed with original compositions which exhibit some dazzling jazz-influenced pyrotechnics.
They're joined by a stunning selection of star guests: legendary uilleann piper Liam O'Flynn; Máire's gifted fiddle-playing sisters Nollaig, who has been a member of bands as diverse as Planxty and the RTE Symphony Orchestra (!) and whose virtuosity, versatility and lyricism are displayed throughout the album, and Mairéad, whose distinctive, subtle and very traditional style is featured on one track, "Frieze Britches"; bass player Danny Thompson, renowned in jazz and other music circles and known to folk music fans since his early days with Pentangle; and mandolin maestro Simon Mayor.
