Lyrics from two songs from Live In The Highlands |
Thugamar Féin an Samhradh
Linn (We Brought the Summer with us) This very old Irish song was traditionally sung on
Bealtaine (May Day), one of the four major festivals of the ancient pagan Celtic year.
There were many rituals associated with this song, all of which have now completely died
out. |
Thugamar féin an
samhradh linn

A Shaighdiúirín a Chroí (O Little Soldier of my Heart) This song tells the story, common to many traditions, of a naive girl who falls in love with a rakish soldier. He strings her along for a while, making the excuse that he can't marry her becuase he has no suitable shoes/coat/hat to put on. After shamelessly accepting presents of these items from her he heartlessly announces that he's married already.

A shaighdiúirín a
chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A chailín bhig mo chroí, conas a phósfainnse thú, Is gan fiú na mbróga 'gam a chuirfinn orm?" Ach chuaidh me chuig an gréasaí ab'fhearr a bhí ann Agus cheannaigh mise bróga do mo shaighdiúirín ann "A shaighdiúirín a chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A shaighdiúirín a chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A chailín bhig mo chroí, conas a phósfainnse thú, Is gan fiú an cóta 'gam a chuirfinn orm?" Ach chuaidh mé chuig an táilliúir ab'fhearr a bhí ann Agus cheannaigh mise cóta do mo shaighdiúirín ann "A shaighdiúirín a chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A shaighdiúirín a chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A chailín bhig mo chroí, conas a phósfainnse thú, Is gan fiú an hata 'gam a chuirfinn orm?" Ach chuaidh me chuig an siopa ab'fhearr a bhí ann Agus cheannaigh mise hata do mo shaighdiúirín ann "A shaighdiúirín a chroí will you marry marry me?" Le haigh nó le hó nó le bualadh'n drum "A chailín bhig mo chroí, conas a phósfainnse thú, 'Gus bean agus clann ar an dtaobh eile'n sruth?"
